The formerly wild Mustangs were picked up in April at a location in VA and began their training with Suzanne and the Interns soon thereafter. We have to “gentle” the horses first because they are really untouchable when they arrive from the holding facilities. This process is very tedious and requires a lot of time and patience – it can’t be rushed. Once we gain the horse’s trust a dialogue begins and a whole new world opens up. They become Partners and accept NLHTM Training with ease. It is truly amazing to see how far the horses have come in just three short months.

The NLHTM trained Mustangs are looking good for the competition and have been a joy to work with. The Interns have had an immeasurable experience putting their newly gained NLHTM Training Techniques to work on the formerly wild horses and are finalizing their routines for the freestyle competition at the event.

If you can join us at the Dream Park we would love to see you there!

In December, Suzanne and NLHTM intern Anna Jacob traveled to Chicago to have a little fun with Mario Contreras, head trainer and stable manager for the Medieval Times Castle there. Mario also trains out of Indian Hill Stables just outside of Chicago and Suzanne worked with him there on high school maneuvers with his Andalusian Stallions. Mario is well versed in the Baroque Horse, recognized for his training abilities by various associations and recently by Dressage Today as one of the country’s leading dressage trainers.

Mario was a gracious host and gave Suzanne and Anna back stage passes to the stables at Medieval Times and front row seats for the dinner theater to witness first hand the spectacular events that unfold from all of the behind the scenes efforts. You can learn more about the Medieval Times show by visiting their website .

At Indian Hills Stables, Suzanne had fun working on Piaffe, Passage, Spanish Walk and Working Equitation with Mario and the magnificent Andalusians. Working Equitation is a competition sanctioned by the International Andalusian and Lusitano Horse Association (IALHA) and something that Suzanne will be competing in with her Andalusian Celio when he is ready. Suzanne is also training Piaffe with Celio now and had a lot of fun riding the maneuvers on Mario’s horses.

As part of the NLHTM Internship experience students get to travel with Suzanne when she works with other professional trainers in the industry. These experiences are unique for the students and give them the opportunity to solidify what they learn about training in the NLHTM Program. Learn more about internship opportunities at NLH.

Visit Suzanne on Facebook to see a complete album of her visit with Mario.

In October of this year, World Cup polo-cross player, Ryan Murphy came to PA to give a polo-cross clinic for our local club. He was unable to bring a mount so NLH was asked if we would be willing to provide one for him to use. We were excited to offer him “Nikki”, a 5 year old Quarter Horse mare owned by Sue Ellen Greggo and started and trained by Suzanne at NLH. Nikki is an awesome gal and Ryan thought so too! While aboard Nikki, he approached Suzanne and said “she is so nice….I love how she moves off of your leg and is so responsive!”.

Nikki was brought to NLH after Sue Ellen purchased her as a 2 year old at the Penn State University’s annual Quarter Horse sale. Nikki was started using in the NLH Program and progressed to showing her skills in a regional Reining show circuit in 2010.

When we started Nikki she was very good but had a lot of “thrust”. She is big girl and had power she didn’t know she had. When she moved out she made our arena feel as though it was 10 times smaller than it really was because she just power housed around in her gaits. To resolve this, we began breezing her on the trails prior to her lessons in the indoor arena. This gave Nikki the opportunity to stretch out, learn to balance a rider, and develop her cadence without being restricted to the confines of the arena. When Nikki began to develop some rhythm and cadence to her stride, she also began to rate herself and started to slow down and wait for the rider’s cues.

Nikki is now extremely fine tuned and a very versatile horse. She and Sue Ellen have so many options available to them from trail riding to showing in various disciplines. Who knows…maybe she will find herself in a polo-cross match some day or even up against cows in the reined cow horse competitions! She’s an awesome mover too and may even compete in some hunter classes.

With NLH training, you get the good stuff. You get what you need give yourself options with your horse. We build the Partnership first, then the Foundations for Performance and Possibilities! Ask us how we can help you with your horse!

Last year Suzanne bought two then coming 2-year old reining prospects from the NRHA Futurity Sale in Oklahoma. Both horses are enrolled in the Futurity for 2012. Suzanne is gearing up to attend this year’s event the week of November 28th to have a little fun, network with friends and associates and check out her competition for next year.

Both Walla Whiz Wanda (Kahlua) and Spooks Miss Shine (Cisco) are doing great in their training so far and are expected to be showing on the circuit early next spring. Suzanne is very excited to attend the NRHA event this year. “It will be relaxing this year”, says Suzanne, “…next year, when I’m showing, maybe not so much.”

Midwest Equine Online

Many of us like to trail ride on occasion and many people I know trail ride competitively. Some people travel with their horses and go on organized trail rides all over the country. What a beautiful way to see the country! One of my goals in life is to vacation with my horses and trail ride through some of this country’s most scenic locations.

I’m always amazed when I talk to people who have never trail ridden. I can’t imagine never seeing the beauty of this land from horseback and feeling the freedom-something liberating, that riding through the mountains and across the wide open fields provides. At Next Level HorsemanshipTM, we use the trail everyday to train our horses to do some amazing things. Every horse that we get in for training gets routine lessons on the trail weather they are being schooled for reining competitions, dressage tests, as hunter jumpers or as ‘trail’ horses…Read more starting on page 14

I came to Next Level Horsemanship TM after seeing Suzanne, Lauren, and Brooke show their wonderfully trained mustangs at the Ag Arena in State College, PA. I had been taking riding lessons elsewhere already, but I spoke to Suzanne after the presentation about coming out to see her work and to talk to her about what my options might be. It was the opportunity I had been waiting for! I spent several hours watching Suzanne and the other staff work with horses using natural horsemanship techniques. She and I talked about my interests and goals and created a riding program that would work for me as an individual. I signed up for the daily lease option and came once a week. I spent a couple of hours each time, taking my time with grooming, learning ground work, and honing my riding skills. It’s a wonderfully well-rounded program with plenty of feedback and input and flexibility. It’s about learning the broader aspects of horsemanship rather than focusing on the details of proper riding form. The horses available for lease are varied in personality and specialty, but they are all grounded in Suzanne’s basic training program, responding well to the rider and understanding what is being asked of them. Suzanne and Lauren were always welcoming and I felt free to show up anytime at their facility during their normal hours. I am sorry to be leaving Suzanne’s program, but a relocation out of state is taking me too far away to continue my training.

Next Level Horsemanship TM will helping to make dreams come true for two families this year. Owning an American Mustang is a childhood dream of many horse lovers but gentling those horses and making that dream a reality can be a challenge for those who don’t have the facilities or the experience needed to handle a wild horse.

Now, Next Level HorsemanshipTM will make that dream come true for two families in Pennsylvania by gentling and training their newly adopted mustangs this May. The adoption will take place in April and the horses will be eligible to compete in the Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover in Fort Worth, TX in September.

Good new for NLHTM fans! We will open our doors for everyone to follow the progress of our mustangs! Look for upcoming clinics that will involve their gentling and training – and follow their progress online. You can vote for our mustangs then in the ‘fan-favorite’ competition at Fort Worth! Stay tuned for updates!

Through a mutual friend, I became aware of Suzanne and the wonderful work she is doing at Next Level Horsemanship. I was fortunate enough to attend a lecture and subsequent demonstration she was doing with her mustangs. It was wonderful to witness first-hand the communication and bond between Suzanne, Lauren, Brooke and their horses. After several discussions, visits to her barn, and much research, our family has decided to adopt a mustang and participate in the Extreme Supreme Mustang Challenge. We are so excited to begin this journey with Suzanne and our new horse. I think that this will be a summer we will never forget! ~Leslie, Kevin, Elena and Grace

The Soergels: Hi! My name is Mary Kay Soergel. I have been asked to write about my involvement in the up coming Mustang Extreme Supreme Makeover. I have known Lauren Ross since her days in Jr. High School, as a very good friend to my daughter, Meredith. Lauren worked for our family farm during High School, where she met her husband, Joe (our wholesale mgr). She bought her first horse,Turbo from me (after he dumped my husband 3 times!).

It has been exciting to watch her career blossom from a new horse owner to a first rate trainer. Lauren is a confident, caring horsewoman who enriches the lives of the horses she trains. We are very excited to be able to share this endeavor with her.

The Mustang is a beautiful symbol that represents everything good about the country I love. I am honored to be a part of supporting their heritage. We hope to eventually introduce a trained Mustang into our riding program. I currently teach obstacle- based horsemanship. We stress a relationship of trust and respect between horse and rider as they learn to navigate through obstacles, in hand and mounted. This may be a competition, but if we can adopt a mustang and work with Lauren, we consider ourselves winners just to be involved!
